Each year on June 8, people worldwide celebrate World Ocean Day, recognizing the ocean’s essential role in regulating climate, producing much of the oxygen we breathe, and sustaining life on Earth.
This year’s action theme—Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet—highlights the importance of safeguarding marine ecosystems through effective protection and stewardship. As pressures from climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss grow, marine protected areas remain one of the most important tools for preserving ocean health for future generations.
Another defining feature of World Ocean Day 2026 is the growing leadership of young people. The World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council includes members and alumni from countries worldwide who organize community initiatives, advocate for policy change, and inspire action throughout the year. Their work reminds us that protecting our ocean is not the responsibility of one nation or generation but a shared global effort.
At Betancourt Group, we believe conservation is driven not only by science and policy but also by communication. The stories we tell shape public understanding, influence decision-makers, and inspire action. An informed and engaged public is essential to building a healthier relationship with our ocean.
For that reason, we are pleased to relaunch our World Ocean Day page, featuring the return of our Daily Ocean Wisdom series, which debuted last year. Throughout the campaign, we will share reflections, insights, and stories that celebrate our blue planet and encourage deeper appreciation for the ocean that connects us all. Whether you live on the coast or hundreds of miles inland. On World Ocean Day—and every day—we invite you to learn, share, and become part of the growing movement to protect it.
One Ocean. One Climate. One Future.
